She is sexy isn't she? I think she's definitely the collector only type of Barbie. I don't doubt there is some serious cash being spent in the Barbie industry! I know a woman who wanted one, just ONE outfit made by a Barbie doll clothes designer on eBay. She kept bidding and was outbid on every auction by the same person who by her purchashing history had bought in excess of 30K worth of Barbie designer outfits in a 6 month period! I guess it's the diamonds and gold that determine the price. WOW! I'd much rather have some beautiful jewelry but I know the meaning of obsession and there are so really obsessed collectors out there who pay exhorbitant prices for these things. I think not, because she's a form of escapism and fantasy. It always surprised me she wasn't viewed in that vein on a continuum as opposed to being banned or examined from a cultural/sociological perspective. What little girl doesn't love a Barbie! I can recall when I was a kid, it was looked down upon to have homemade Barbie outfits. They had to be Matel. These days, as Beau mentioned, handmade outfits are not only better made, they are pricier too! Sharon! You'll have to let me know if you go, and take lots of pics.
