The tradition of the promise ring dates back many years to a time during which the price of gold was prohibitive, so when things got serious, a woman was given a silver ring to pledge the promise of things to come. Upon marriage, the sterling silver ring was replaced with a gold band. The tradition continues, today, with the contemporary version of the promise ring – typically comprised of a thin gold band, with a delicate stone (euphemism for barely visible to the naked eye!), it is a sweet gesture, a sentiment usually reserved for that particular brand of young love with questionable longevity!

Owing to the aforementioned association with promise rings, I was surprised to read that Justin Timberlake and Jessica had decided to embrace this tradition which is today widely regarded as the exclusive domain of the “puppy love” set whose disposable income is at a premium!

With nuptials not impending, but a desire to establish an outward symbol of commitment to his relationship with Jessica, Justin was spotted shopping for a sparkler which he termed a “promise ring”.

Will these two put a whole new spin on the tradition of promise rings? With the absence of the monetary constraints usually attributed to promise rings, how hefty a promise has he made in carat weight?

Perhaps he has purchased a right hand ring for Jessica, a gemstone ring, or maybe a diamond fashion ring, to be replaced upon engagement with a something to symbolize eternity. I’m sure we’ll all be on the lookout to see what Jessica is sporting!

I love celebrities. (In case you missed that.) They are the true heroes. Who else has the time and money for the noble cause of looking fabulous? It inspires us mere mortals to strive! But it isn’t always easy on them…

On styleikon.com I found a posting about Jessica Biel’s troubles after becoming Esquire Magazine’s “Sexiest Woman Alive.” She told Elle mag that she’s too sexy for many roles! Directors tell her they want a “girl-next-door” type instead. What has become of Hollywood?

What is wrong with them? This could be the girl next door. LOL Why not? Love those hoops. And I am really into that rounded gold pendant. Smooth, Elegant, Sexy. (I could live without the gold dog-tag. Save that for the girl next door.)

Drop earrings were clearly the popular favorite on the red carpet. My three top picks:

1) Natalie Portman.

Funky diamond and onyx. She’s wearing the same dress as Madonna, but who cares? I trimmed it so you won’t have to think about that.

2) Anne Hathaway.

Exquisite teardrop pearls. (I did you a favor and cut off her unfortunate collection of bracelet bangles.)

3) Jessica Biel.

Chunky diamond medallion drop. She got flak for her dress, apparently, so I cut that off too. We’re here to take about jewelry, after all.

OK, I’m clearing out my notes on the awards shows so I can move on with life as we know it.

I had a great bird’s eye view at The Golden Globes. Sort of. I got a coconut wrap and massage at the Peninsula, and I was hoping I’d be able to look down on the red carpet at the Hilton. What a really great idea, right? Wrong. The pool guy thought I was going to jump and he dragged me away from the rooftop fence and I made a scene and needless to say I went home and watched it on T.V. It’s a better view anyway.

So basically, there were some gigantic earrings going on at the Golden Globes. J-Lo had huge diamond chandeliers, Beyonce had great big door-knockers hanging off her head. But the winner hands-down was Jessica Biel, in a supersized version of the bean-style diamond arrangement.

Look at how her face is so ultra modern, but she can carry off these earrings! (Some might say the dress gives her a bit of help.)
